Put Yourself in the Corner: The 60-Second "Field Goal" Reset
We’ve all heard the phrase "put yourself in the corner" as a punishment. But if you spend your day driving a rig or sitting at a desk, the corner is actually exactly where you need to be to find relief.
When we are focused—whether on the road or a screen—our shoulders naturally roll forward and our chest muscles (the pectorals) begin to shorten and tighten. This "closed-off" posture is a primary driver of chronic neck tension and those nagging "knots" between your shoulder blades.
The "Field Goal" Corner Stretch
This is one of my favorite clinical recommendations because it requires zero equipment—just a corner of a room and a minute of your time.
How to do it:
Find Your Corner: Stand facing a corner of the room.
The "Field Goal" Arms: Raise your arms so your elbows are at shoulder height and your forearms are flat against the walls on either side of the corner (like you're signaling a touchdown or a field goal).
The Lean: Slowly lean your chest into the corner until you feel a deep, opening stretch across the front of your shoulders and chest.
The Breath: Hold this for 30 seconds. Take three deep, "tall" breaths. With every exhale, imagine your shoulder blades sliding down your back toward your back pockets.
It Works
By opening the chest, you are physically "undoing" the slumped posture of driving. This creates immediate space for your neck to move freely and takes the mechanical strain off the muscles that hold your head up.
Increased Range of Motion = Safer Driving. When you can turn your head easier, checking your mirrors and navigating traffic becomes less of a literal pain in the neck.
